Orton Gillingham Handwriting Workshop – $249.95

This Orton Gillingham Handwriting Kit has been forged out of many years of teaching using the Orton Gillingham Approach. When a student is phonemically aware, meaning having the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the smallest units of sound (phonemes) within a word, the student should then work on mastering the alphabetic principle, which means having an understanding that there is a logical connection between the sounds and symbols in the English language. As students correctly form the symbols (letters) of the alphabet, they are simultaneously saying the sounds those symbols make. This sets the stage for literacy success. Keep in mind, as the student works on correct letter formation, it is best at this stage to not say the letter name, but rather the sound the letter(s) makes. Saying the letter name is often a source of confusion for emerging readers. Given this, it is important to teach the letter names before beginning the lessons in this Handwriting Kit.

NOTE: This is an evolving resource, and additional material may be added at any time.

10-Hour Handwriting Workshop contents:

  • Handwriting instructional modules, including video demonstrations
  • Prepared lesson plans
  • Gross & fine Motor activities for handwriting warm-up, as well as crossing the midline exercises
  • Letters for tracing (both for pre-readers and older student remedial practice)
  • Student workbooks geared for both the pre-k/k student, as well as the older, remedial student
  • Phonemic awareness activities
  • Handwriting warm-up exercises
  • And much more…

It is a good idea to provide the student with a tactile surface to enhance his/her learning experience. Below is a recommended list that can be used at school as well as at home:

  • Felt
  • Sand tray
  • Needle point canvas sheet (clear needle point canvas would be excellent for use over the large traceable letters)
  • Glitter foam
  • Sand paper letters

As you work through the lessons in this kit, teach the lowercase letters first, as the student will be exposed to them more often in everyday print than the uppercase letters. One of the essential elements of the Orton Gillingham Approach is “sequential.” When materials are presented sequentially, they are taught in order of frequency, or that which occurs most often in the English language. When the student has mastered the lowercase manuscript letters, it is appropriate to move on to uppercase and then on to cursive (*This handwriting kit will only cover the lowercase and uppercase manuscript letters).

We hope you find the contents embedded in this Handwriting Workshop valuable to use in your classroom or at home. Thank-you for doing what you are doing because the world needs what only you have to offer!
