Phonological awareness is important for remediation. It is the foundation upon which all the other layers are built. Unless it is solid, the student will struggle to read.

This resource provides activities for the four levels of phonological awareness:

1. Word level –

a. The ability to determine the number of words in a spoken sentence

b. blend and segment the two parts of a compound word (e.g.,

doghouse)

2. Syllable level –

a. The ability to blend and segment the parts of a multisyllabic word

(beginning with two-syllable words e.g., mag/net)

3. Onset-rime level –

a. the ability to determine if two words rhyme

b. the ability to generate rhyming words

c. blend and segment words into their onset and rime. (e.g., cat= /k/-

onset, /at/-rime)

4. Phoneme level –

a. the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes in spoken words

b. phonemic awareness is the most sophisticated level of

phonological awareness.

c. Phonemic Awareness Skills:

1. Isolation – The ability to name the first, middle, and last sounds

in a word.

2. Identity – The ability to identify a pair of words with the same

beginning, middle, or ending sound.

3. Blending – The ability to make a word from isolated sounds.

4. Segmentation – The ability to separate a word into its sounds

5. Deletion – The ability to delete a beginning or ending

phoneme in a word.

6. Addition – The ability to make a new word by adding a

phoneme.
