
Day 4: Why Some Students Freeze on Words They Should Be Able to Read
Picture this: a student can identify every single sound in a word. Ask them in isolation /c/, /a/, /t/, and they nail it every time.
But put those same sounds together on the page, and they freeze.
They guess. They look at you for help. Or they sound out each letter so slowly and disconnectedly that, by the time they reach the end of the word, they’ve completely lost the beginning.
If this sounds familiar, here’s the good news: it’s not a blending problem. It’s a working memory problem.
Once you understand that distinction, you also understand there is a better way to teach blending and decoding.
Two simple but powerful strategies—onset-rime blending and backward blending—can completely change the game for your struggling readers.
The Traditional Approach (And Why It’s Not Wrong, Just Incomplete)
Most of us were trained to teach blending sound by sound, left to right, all the way through a word.
For cat, that looks like this:
/c/ … /a/ … /t/ … cat
This approach isn’t wrong. It’s the foundation of phonics instruction, and plenty of students blend this way with no trouble at all.
But for many struggling readers, sound-by-sound blending places a heavy demand on working memory.
Students must hold three (or four, or five) separate, isolated sounds in their heads at the same time. Then they have to merge them all together.
By the time they reach the last sound in the word, the first sound has often already slipped away.
It’s not that they aren’t trying hard enough. Their working memory is simply maxed out before they ever get the chance to blend.
Fortunately, there is a better way to teach blending and decoding.
These two additional strategies don’t replace sound-by-sound blending. Instead, they provide students with weaker phonological working memory an easier on-ramp into decoding.
Strategy One: Onset-Rime Blending
What it is
Every syllable can be split into two parts:
- The onset: the consonant or consonant blend that comes before the vowel.
- The rime: the vowel and everything that follows it.
In the word cat, the onset is c, and the rime is -at.
Why it works
Instead of asking students to hold three isolated sounds in their heads, onset-rime blending breaks the task into two smaller steps.
First, blend the rime:
/a/ … /t/ → at
Students are still sounding out each phoneme. They’re simply starting with a VC (vowel-consonant) word instead of a full CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) word.
That smaller unit is much easier to hold onto.
Next, add the onset:
c + at → cat
Now the student only has to hold two pieces in working memory: one stable, already-blended chunk and one new sound.
That’s much easier than juggling three separate, unconnected sounds.
Why this matters for word families
This is also why word family instruction (-at, -op, -ing, -ake, etc.) is so effective for early and struggling readers.
A student who gets stuck trying to blend /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ sound by sound often has much more success blending st + -op, because the rime is already a solid, familiar chunk.
A note on rigor
Onset-rime blending is not a whole-word or sight-word strategy.
It should never be used to skip decoding.
Students are still decoding every sound in the word. The only difference is the order and grouping of the sounds.
This reduces cognitive load without sacrificing accuracy.
Strategy Two: Backward Blending
What it is
Backward blending, sometimes called final blending, is a technique borrowed from Orton-Gillingham methodology.
Instead of blending from the beginning of the word to the end, students build the word from the last sound to the first.
How it works
Using the word stop:
- Start with the last sound: /p/
- Add the sound before it: op
- Add the next sound: top
- Add the first sound: stop
Why it works
In traditional forward blending, students often lose the beginning sounds of a word while they’re still working through the middle and end.
The earliest information fades before it can be used.
Backward blending flips the process.
The ending of the word is established first and stays anchored in memory the entire time.
Each new sound is added to a chunk that is already secure.
Nothing has to be held and then abandoned. Every new sound becomes part of the growing whole.
This strategy is especially effective for students with weak phonological working memory, which describes many struggling readers.
An important distinction
Backward blending and onset-rime blending are related, but they are not identical.
Onset-rime blending divides a word into its linguistic parts: the onset and the rime.
Backward blending changes the sequence of blending by building from the end of the word toward the beginning, regardless of how the word is divided.
In practice, the two strategies often overlap. Building the rime before adding the onset is, in many cases, a form of backward building.
Even so, they are two distinct instructional tools that can also be used independently.
Putting It Into Practice
Here’s the key takeaway: blending is not one-size-fits-all.
Sound-by-sound blending, onset-rime blending, and backward blending are three different tools.
The goal isn’t to replace one with another. It’s to know when to use each one.
If a student can identify individual sounds but struggles to merge three or more of them at once, try onset-rime blending. It reduces the number of pieces the student has to hold in working memory.
If a student consistently loses the beginning of a word by the time they reach the end, try backward blending. It keeps the ending anchored while the word is built.
If a student already blends confidently sound by sound, there’s no need to change anything.
Keep doing what’s working.
The goal is always the same: give students exactly as much support as they need to succeed at true, sound-based decoding—never less and never more.
The Bottom Line: There Is a Better Way to Teach Blending and Decoding
Struggling readers who know every sound but still can’t blend words aren’t failing at phonics.
They’re running out of working memory before they get the chance to succeed.
Onset-rime blending and backward blending don’t lower the bar.
They simply reduce how much a student has to juggle at one time, allowing their decoding skills to finally show up on the page.
