
#18 Reading Mistake: Underprioritizing Background Knowledge
Imagine handing two students the same passage about glaciers. Both students decode every word accurately. Both read with appropriate rate and expression. But one student understands the passage immediately, while the other struggles to make sense of it. What made the difference? It wasn’t their decoding skills. Background knowledge is essential for reading comprehension.
Reading Is More Than Decoding Words
One of the biggest misconceptions in reading instruction is that once students can decode, comprehension naturally follows. Decoding is essential, but it is only one piece of the comprehension puzzle.
Reading comprehension happens when students combine what they successfully decode with what they already know about the topic. The more relevant knowledge they bring to a text, the easier it is to construct meaning. Research consistently shows that background knowledge is a powerful contributor to comprehension, especially when readers encounter new information.
Think about this example.
A student reads the sentence:
The glacier slowly carved the valley.
If the student has never learned what a glacier is, they may pronounce every word correctly but still have little understanding of the sentence. Now imagine that same student has previously learned that a glacier is a massive, slow-moving sheet of ice that shapes the land over time. Suddenly, the sentence makes perfect sense. The words haven’t changed. The student’s knowledge has.
Why Background Knowledge Matters
Our brains don’t read words in isolation. As we read, we constantly connect new information to what we already know. Those existing mental frameworks help us make sense of unfamiliar ideas and remember what we’ve read.
When students have limited background knowledge, reading becomes much harder because there are fewer connections for new learning to attach to. Decades of research on schema theory and reading comprehension support this relationship between prior knowledge and understanding.
This is one reason students can read fluently yet still struggle to answer comprehension questions. The difficulty isn’t always with reading; it may be with knowledge.
Building Knowledge Is Part of Reading Instruction
Effective reading instruction doesn’t stop after teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies.
It also intentionally builds knowledge.
Teachers can do this by:
- Reading rich informational and narrative texts aloud.
- Teaching vocabulary before students encounter it in text.
- Discussing science, history, geography, and the arts.
- Using content-rich text sets that deepen understanding of a topic over time.
- Encouraging meaningful conversations that help students connect new ideas to previous learning.
Each new experience expands a student’s knowledge base, making future reading easier and more meaningful.
The Goal Is Understanding
We don’t teach students to read simply so they can pronounce words. We teach them to understand ideas, learn new information, and make connections that will serve them throughout life. The more students know about the world, the more they are able to comprehend what they read.

Students cannot fully comprehend information they have never had the opportunity to learn. When we intentionally build background knowledge alongside decoding and language skills, we give students the foundation they need to become thoughtful, confident readers.
